How to read a wall framing cut list and lumber plan
Use numbered studs, face and centre stations, sloped cut marks and stock-board assignments to turn the framing plan into a checked field worksheet.
Start with the member mark
Select a piece in the elevation or in the numbered member schedule. E identifies an end stud, F a common stud, K a king, J a jack, C a cripple, H a header, S a rough sill, T a top plate and B a bottom plate.
The selected detail shows the member’s left face station, centre station for vertical pieces, bottom elevation and stock-board assignment. All positions come from the wall’s left edge and floor datum. Keep that orientation when transferring the plan to the plates.
Mark the face and the waste side
For a 1½-inch stud at a 48-inch centre station, the faces lie at 47¼ and 48¾ inches. Mark the appropriate face and put an X on the side occupied by the stud. Repeatedly measuring from the previous stud can accumulate error; use the common wall datum.
Cut lengths are blank lengths rounded upward to the next 1/16 inch. Exact transfer points are shown separately in decimal inches. Confirm the assembled dimensions and make final fitting cuts on site.
Retain both ends of an angled stud cut
A sloped stud’s left and right faces have different heights. Read the top marks across the narrow wall-facing face, measured upward from the stud’s bottom. Join those marks to obtain the cut line.
If the gable peak falls inside a stud’s face, the schedule includes the interior peak mark as well as both edges. Keep both slopes; a single diagonal between the outer edges would remove the peak.
Top plates are measured along the board axis. Angled cut transfer points describe the perimeter inside that board’s blank, including plumb wall ends and mitered peak ends. The listed axis angle describes the wall elevation; it is not an instruction to set a saw’s bevel or miter control to that number.
Follow the header detail you entered
A header spans the clear opening plus the selected jack bearing on both sides. For a 38-inch rough opening with one 1½-inch jack per side, each header ply is 41 inches long. The H mark represents the built-up header in elevation; H01.1 and H01.2 on the lumber plan are its individual plies.
Header depth, ply count, material grade and bearing capacity must come from the selected construction detail. The planner keeps header stock separate from main framing even when dimensions happen to match. Any remaining wall depth is reported, but filler, insulation and connectors are separate materials.
Turn L-numbers into an order
Each L-number is one stock board. Cut the listed members in sequence; the allocation includes saw kerf between pieces and the final trim where applicable. Compatible short pieces can share a board. Defects and initial end squaring still need your field allowance.
The stock list totals boards by actual material group and length. The spare percentage rounds up within each group, so a small header group may add one whole spare board. Spares are listed uncut and are not included in the offcut total.
Efficient stock mix compares practical long-first packing. Lower material cost requires a price for every enabled length in every group. Neither mode guarantees the mathematically cheapest possible cutting pattern. Prices exclude tax, delivery and non-lumber materials.
Review plate joints before using the list
Long plates are split at available supporting stud centres to fit the selected stock. Alternate top layers prefer separated joints where the geometry permits; check the actual lap, splice and connection requirements for your assembly. All gable plate layers meet at the peak and need the specified peak connection.
Bottom plates are counted continuously through door openings for wall assembly. Remove those sections after erection. Corners, intersecting walls, bracing, fire stops and special blocking need their own detail and additional quantities.
Print takeoff includes the wall inputs, member marks, cut points, opening schedule and stock assignments. Use it as a checked worksheet, not a substitute for the construction drawings.
