How to measure wall framing and rough openings
Set the floor datum, overall frame heights, actual lumber dimensions and clear rough openings before laying out a flat, sloped or gable wall.
Measure the outside of the frame
Enter the wall’s overall length from its left outside edge to its right outside edge. All vertical measurements use one floor datum. Overall height includes the bottom and top plates; it is not the stud cut length.
For a flat 96-inch frame with one 1½-inch bottom plate and two 1½-inch top plates, a common stud is 91½ inches long. If you intend to use precut studs, start with their actual length and add the selected plate stack to determine the resulting frame height.
Capture the roof line with vertical measurements
A triangular finish wall may go to zero at an end, but a framed end needs room for its plates and end stud. The planner rejects an end that is too short for the selected framing.
Sloped top plates keep their thickness perpendicular to the board. Their vertical depth is larger than their actual thickness, so simply subtracting three inches for two plates would give the wrong sloped stud cuts.
- Flat top: one overall frame height.
- Single slope: left and right heights above the same floor datum.
- Gable: both end heights, the peak height and the horizontal distance from the left edge to the peak. Turn off Centred peak for an offset peak.
Use actual sizes and a deliberate stud grid
The lumber presets populate common dressed dimensions; check the stock you will actually buy. Stud face / plate thickness is the narrow dimension visible in the wall elevation. Wall depth is perpendicular to the drawing.
The first-stud entry is its exact centre station from the left outside edge. A first centre of 15¼ inches followed by 16-inch spacing gives centres at 15¼, 31¼ and 47¼ inches. End packs and opening assemblies replace grid studs where their material would overlap.
Packed end studs are an elevation quantity. A corner return or intersecting wall needs its own plan-view arrangement and backing detail.
Enter the clear rough opening
Use the door or window manufacturer’s required rough opening, including its stated installation clearance. The planner’s width is the clear distance between the inside faces of the jack studs. Height runs from the rough-opening bottom to the underside of the header. Do not enter the finished sash or door-slab size.
Door openings start at the floor datum. For a window, enter the height to the top of the rough sill; the sill sits below that line. The tool models one sill member with the selected plate thickness.
Enter the actual header depth, header ply count, kings per side and jacks per side from the project’s framing detail. Values loaded when you add an opening are editable examples, not a structural sizing recommendation.
Check the whole assembly fits
The king and jack packs extend outside the clear opening. Leave room for them between openings and beside the wall ends. The header must fit below the actual sloped plate underside across its full width.
This version rejects overlapping opening packs. It does not combine shared kings, stacked openings or special engineered connections automatically. Revise the geometry or use a separately detailed assembly.
