Layout method

The opening is divided into equal spaces on both ends and between every baluster. The calculator finds the smallest whole baluster count that does not exceed your selected maximum clear gap.

Measure the clear opening

Measure between the inside faces of the installed posts at the actual baluster line. Check both top and bottom rails if the posts are not perfectly parallel.

Use actual material width

A nominal 2-inch member may actually measure 1 1/2 inches. The width entered here is subtracted from the opening before the remaining space is divided equally.

Transfer the layout

Mark the first baluster centre from the inside face of the first post, then repeat the on-centre dimension. Check the final mark before fastening anything permanently.

Maximum gap is not the whole guard design.

Confirm the opening limit, guard height, baluster strength, climbability, rail spans, post connections and fastening requirements that apply to the location and occupancy. Measure the real opening and verify the completed guard before use.
