Baluster layout marks without cumulative error

Transfer calculated baluster centres accurately and keep fractional rounding from drifting across a long railing section.

Work from one datum

Choose one finished post face as the datum and measure every centre from that same reference. Stepping a tape or spacer repeatedly from the previous baluster compounds small errors and can leave the last gap visibly different.

Control fractional rounding

The exact spacing may not land on a convenient tape fraction. If you round each repeated space independently, the total error multiplies. Use the calculator's centre marks or mark several cumulative positions from the datum.

  • Mark the first centre precisely.
  • Pull one tape from the datum for each subsequent centre.
  • Check the midpoint and final centre before fastening anything.
  • Dry-place several balusters to verify the visual rhythm and end gaps.

Check the real assembly

Actual baluster width, post position, plumb, rail length, and coatings can differ from nominal dimensions. Measure a real baluster and the installed opening, then verify both end gaps after rounding.
