How to carry a framing layout into a drywall plan

Transfer the wall shape, rough openings and actual framing spans, then choose drywall lengths and joints against the same wall.

Use one wall description for both tools

Finish the wall geometry and opening details in the framing planner, then choose Plan the drywall. The same tab opens the drywall planner with the wall shape, end and peak heights, rough openings and actual framing stations loaded.

The handoff preserves inches and the left-to-right wall orientation. It does not transfer a drywall sheet price or assume a sheet length, orientation or access limit; those decisions still belong to the drywall job.

A centre mark is only part of the support

A king stud runs the full framed height. A jack stops below the header, and a cripple occupies only the portion above the header or below a sill. Treating every one of their centre marks as a full-height stud could place a drywall joint over empty space.

The imported layout checks the vertical portion of each sheet joint against the actual modeled framing spans. Header, sill and plate material can supply support where their geometry intersects that station. Portions inside an opening are removed from the joint-support requirement.

The stud overlay shows these support lengths rather than extending every mark from floor to roof. This still requires the wall on site to match the frame you modeled.

Choose the sheets for the actual access route

Set sheet width, available 8-, 10- and 12-foot lengths, orientation and the longest blank you can carry into the work area. Allow pre-cutting only when the full stock sheet can be cut before entering the restricted area.

Compare Balanced layout, Lower sheet cost and Less joint length. If no option fits the imported supports, try a longer accessible sheet or another orientation. Add or change backing only through a deliberate framing detail, then update the frame and transfer it again.

Review opening-corner warnings and the assembly’s requirements for horizontal joints, perimeter support, board type, fastening and movement. The support check does not select those installation details for you.

Keep revisions synchronized

Changing imported wall dimensions, opening positions or stud stations pauses the drywall result because the stored framing no longer describes that wall. Return to framing to revise it, then send the updated wall again.

Detach framing layout explicitly returns the drywall tool to its regular stud grid. That removes the imported partial-support assumptions; verify support around openings and boundaries yourself. Sheet lengths, prices, orientation and access settings can be changed without detaching the frame.

Keep a field copy

The transfer is held for this browser tab’s session. It is not a cloud-saved job, and copying the address to another browser does not carry the wall data. Print the framing takeoff before leaving if you need a durable field copy.

Return to framing restores the geometry used for the handoff. Recheck lumber prices and purchasing preferences there. Print the drywall takeoff separately once its numbered sheet layout and cuts match the installation plan.
