Horizontal vs. vertical drywall layout

Compare horizontal and vertical sheet layouts without assuming one direction is correct for every wall, board product, or rated assembly.

Orientation changes the joint pattern

Horizontal sheets create long tapered-edge joints and require butt ends to land on framing or an approved support detail. Vertical sheets can remove horizontal joints on walls that match an available board length, but every vertical edge still needs the support required by the selected system.

Compare the whole installation

  • Count sheets and butt joints, not square footage alone.
  • Check whether every cut edge and board end has required support.
  • Consider wall height, board length, handling, lifts, openings, and finishing access.
  • Confirm the panel manufacturer's permitted application direction for the framing and spacing.
  • Follow the listed design exactly for fire-, sound-, impact-, or moisture-performance assemblies.

Do not switch orientation in a tested or listed assembly because a calculator shows fewer sheets. The specified panel, layers, orientation, fasteners, joints, framing, insulation, sealants, and details work as a system.
