How to choose 8-, 10-, and 12-foot drywall sheets

Balance material price, butt-joint count, offcuts, room access, handling, and crew capacity when selecting drywall board lengths.

Longer is not automatically cheaper

A longer sheet may span more studs and remove a butt joint, but it can cost more, require extra labour to carry, or create an awkward remainder. A shorter board may be easier to access and install while increasing joints and finishing time.

Compare stock against the actual wall

Purchased area = sum of each selected stock sheet area
Estimated remainder = purchased area − net covered wall area
  • Enter the delivered price for each available length.
  • Set the maximum accessible length before comparing plans.
  • Look at the exact stock mix and numbered cut list—not only total sheet count.
  • Check whether repeated offcuts can be reused elsewhere without creating poor joint locations.
  • Allow for damaged boards and site-specific waste after establishing the cut-aware minimum.

Price finishing as well as board

The lowest board price can still create more butt joints, handling, fastening, taping, sanding, and touch-up. Use the calculator's cost and joint comparisons as separate signals, then apply the crew's real labour rates and production experience.
