Flashing laps, bends, and waste allowance

Plan effective coverage and coil allowance around folds, laps, hems, brake setup, and real-world cutting losses.

Track lock, engagement, and end conditions separately

Lock allowance is the material consumed while forming the receiver or S-lock. Engagement is how far the next piece inserts into that formed lock. A first-end allowance is any separate return, insertion, or termination at the starting edge. Combining these into a generic lap hides why the first piece and repeating pieces can have different coverage.

Confirm the developed profile

  • Sketch every leg, fold, hem, lock, and return in section.
  • Measure the real material allocated to the formed lock.
  • Confirm how deeply the following piece engages the receiver.
  • Verify any starting-edge return separately.
  • Make and test one short sample before cutting the production pieces.

Sharp bends, coatings, material thickness, temperature, and brake setup affect the finished profile. A field sample is cheap insurance.

Use an allowance that matches the job

A simple repeated straight profile may need only a modest allowance. Long tapered blanks, gable transitions, unfamiliar details, limited brake access, or a small remaining partial roll justify more. Keep the calculator's percentage separate from any known setup pieces so the estimate stays understandable.
