Estimate deck joists and fasteners
Turn deck dimensions and spacing into a practical joist-line and decking-fastener estimate while keeping structural design separate.
Lay out joist lines
For a rectangular deck, divide the dimension perpendicular to the joists by the selected on-centre spacing, round up the number of spaces, then include both edge joist lines.
Joist lines = round up (layout width ÷ spacing) + 1
This estimates layout count only. It does not size joists, beams, posts, footings, cantilevers, ledgers, connections, or blocking.
Estimate decking fasteners
A basic face-fastened deck commonly uses two fasteners wherever each board crosses a joist. Multiply board courses by joist lines and by fasteners per crossing, then add allowance for dropped hardware, defects, borders, blocking, and stairs.
Fasteners ≈ board courses × joist lines × fasteners per crossing
Account for the details
- Add framing for picture-frame borders and breaker boards.
- Include doubled members at joints where the installation detail requires them.
- Confirm joist spacing permitted by the decking product and board orientation.
- Count hangers, approved hanger fasteners, structural screws, blocking, and connectors separately.
