Standard vs. flush top-tread mounting

Understand how standard landing and flush top-tread configurations change tread count, total run, stringer length, and attachment planning.

The top detail changes the whole layout

Before laying out a stringer, decide whether the upper landing acts as the final tread or whether the stair receives a dedicated top tread level with that landing. Both can produce equal finished risers, but they do not use the same number of horizontal runs.

Standard: the landing is the final tread

In a standard configuration, the upper deck or landing is the last walking surface. A stair with eight risers therefore has seven stair treads below the landing.

Standard tread count = riser count − 1
  • Uses one fewer horizontal run.
  • Usually creates a shorter overall stair footprint.
  • Requires the stringer-to-header connection to be planned for the selected attachment hardware and framing.

Flush: a dedicated top tread meets the landing

In a flush configuration, a separate top tread finishes level with the landing. Eight risers use eight stair treads, adding one full run to the stair.

Flush tread count = riser count
  • Adds one tread depth to total run.
  • Increases the required stringer length.
  • Changes the upper cut and attachment geometry shown in the calculator diagram.
