Stair handrail vs. guardrail

Understand the different jobs performed by a graspable handrail and a protective stair guard before planning material or connections.

They solve different problems

A handrail is the graspable member used for support while travelling on the stair. A guard is the protective barrier at an open edge. A single assembly may contain both, but the top of a guard is not automatically a compliant or comfortable handrail.

Plan each system deliberately

  • Identify every open stair and landing edge that needs protection.
  • Decide where a continuous graspable handrail is required.
  • Confirm heights, continuity, returns, extensions, clearances and graspability locally.
  • Design posts and connections for the loads and substrate at the real site.
  • Keep the walking line and required clear stair width unobstructed.
